CONGRESSMAN ENGEL PRAISES WOODLAWN'S STATUS AS NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK

Washington, DC -- “As a lifelong Bronx resident, I am pleased to learn that Woodlawn Cemetery will be designated a National Historic Landmark. At nearly 150 years old and where countless great Americans are laid to rest, Woodlawn Cemetery has been instrumental in preserving this nation’s legacy.

“As I stated in my recommendation of Landmark Status to the Landmarks Committee last year, this designation will broaden regional and national awareness of this important historic site, making many more aware of and to enjoy what Woodlawn has to offer.

“Visitors to Woodlawn can experience history and pay tribute to such landmark names in American history as Herman Melville, Admiral David Farragut, Ralph Bunche, George M. Cohan, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Duke Ellington, and even Bat Masterson.

“Woodlawn is itself of historical significance with its carefully preserved examples of 19th century architecture and artwork and numerous mausolea, monuments and glassworks. In addition, the cemetery provides educational tours of the grounds so visitors can learn from the experts.

“The Department of the Interior has finally recognized the cultural importance of Woodlawn Cemetery, something Bronx residents have known for years. I congratulate Woodlawn Cemetery on this great honor.”
