Turnip Day Session

Photo of Senator Harry Truman of Missouri, later U.S. President
Harry Truman (D-MO)

President Harry Truman was desperate. With less than four months remaining before the November 1948 election day, his public approval rating stood at 36 percent. He called back both houses of Congress for an extraordinary session and challenged the Republican majority to pass its unfinished legislative business. The two-week session would begin, Truman declared, on "the 26th of July, which out in Missouri we call 'Turnip Day.'"
