When the Senate created its Historical Office in 1975, it instructed the office to collect, maintain, and make available items relating to the Senate's history, including photographs. Today, the office maintains a collection of thousands of prints, slides, and negatives, including these featured photos of Harry S. Truman.
Before becoming vice president on January 20, 1945, and president on April 12, 1945, following the death of Franklin Roosevelt, Truman served ten years in the Senate. As senator, he chaired the Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program, better known as The Truman Committee.
