STEARNS VOTES WITH HOUSE TODAY ON MOTION TO DEFUND ACORN

ALSO CALLS FOR A JUSTICE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATION OF THE ORGANIZATION

Washington, Sep 17, 2009 - “Scandal after scandal reveals that the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) does not deserve government funding,” said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Sixth). “ACORN is under investigation in several states for misconduct varying from voter fraud to embezzlement, and the latest allegations that resulted in the firing of several ACORN employees underscores the need to end federal support for this group.” During consideration today of H.R. 3221, the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, the House approved a motion to recommit that ends federal funding of ACORN by a vote of 345 to 75. The Senate earlier in the week voted to stop funding ACORN. Since 1994, ACORN has received $54 million in federal dollars.
