STEARNS VOTES WITH HOUSE TO INCREASE FUNDING FOR VETERANS PROGRAMS

MEASURE INCLUDES $21 MILLION STEARNS SOUGHT FOR FLORIDA NATIONAL GUARD’S CAMP BLANDING

Washington, Aug 1, 2008 - “Those in our armed forces put their lives on the line for all of us and they deserve our support when they come home,” said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala), Vice Republican Leader of the House Veterans Affairs Committee. “This measure includes $93.7 billion for veterans programs, a 7-percent increase from last year, which includes $40.7 billion for veterans health programs.”

Stearns joined the House in approving H.R. 6599, the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act. Added Stearns, “In addition, this bill authorizes $5 billion for VA medical facilities, $500 million for veterans medical research, and $1.9 billion for major and minor VA construction projects. I am especially pleased that it provides $3.8 billion for specialty mental health care.”

H.R. 6599 also provides $24.8 billion for military construction projects, including $3.2 billion for military and family housing, and $336 million to continue the quality of life initiative for military personnel and their families. The measure also includes $20.9 million sought by Stearns for Camp Blanding, the premier training facility of the Florida National Guard. “This funding is for Phase IV of the Regional Training Institute at Camp Blanding,” explained Stearns. “While enhancing our military readiness, the Regional Training Institute will reduce costs by locating training facilities in one area.”
