STEARNS URGES FEMA TO MAKE ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE IMMEDIATELY IN RESPONSE TO FLORIDA TORNADOS

"THIS DISASTER REQUIRES A QUICK STATE AND FEDERAL RESPONSE"

Washington, Feb 2, 2007 - "The tornados that struck central Florida this morning brought tragic death and massive destruction," said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala). "This disaster requires a quick state and federal response. Today, I called the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) urging the agency to respond to this disaster and to make emergency funding available to deal with the recovery, repair, and clean up. I also contacted Lake County Sheriff Gary Borders and confirmed that they have submitted the required written request to the State to begin FEMA involvement and are compiling an assessment of the damage." In addition, Stearns contacted the Office of Governor Crist inviting him to tour the damaged area and to offer his help in securing federal assistance.

Lake County has opened an emergency shelter at the North Lake Presbyterian Church, located at 975 Rolling Acres Road in Lady Lake, and at First Baptist Church, located at 25145 Fisherman's Road in Paisley.
