STEARNS SETS SUBCOMMITTEE MARKUP ON HIS DATA SECURITY LEGISLATION

H.R. 4127, THE DATA ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRUST ACT, MARKUP ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2005

Washington, Nov 2, 2005 - “After holding hearings on security breaches involving consumer data and ways to protect consumers’ personal information, I offered H.R. 4127,” said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL), Chairman of the Commerce, Trade & Consumer Protection Subcommittee. “Since the panel already had a hearing on the draft text of this bill, I have scheduled a markup of this legislation. This bill requires entities holding personal information to establish and maintain appropriate security policies to prevent unauthorized acquisition of that data. Also, it requires notification to those individuals whose information has been revealed through a security breach.”

The subcommittee markup is set for Thursday, November 3, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. in room 2123 RHOB. H.R. 4127 was introduced on October 25, 2005 by Stearns and has seven cosponsors, including House Republican Conference Chair, Deborah Pryce, (R-OH).
