STEARNS REACTS TO THE PRESIDENT'S STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

LITTLE TO NO DEFICIT REDUCTION IN SPEECH

WASHINGTON, JAN. 24, 2012 – “Tonight, President Obama shared his vision for the future of our nation, a blueprint that relies on more government, more taxes, and more debt.  He called for mandatory clean energy subsidies and that the Navy must buy this ‘clean’ energy, mortgage rebates from the government for $3,000 per mortgagor, a new Veterans Job Corps to hire them for public service, and amnesty for workers in the nation illegally.  Although he ended his remarks on a high note and quoted President Lincoln, he failed to outline how he would reduce the deficit.”

“Millions in our nation struggle each day to make ends meet -- yet the President failed to call on the federal government to make the same sacrifices as the American family.  Although our national debt exceeds $15 trillion, the President offered no plan for controlling spending or reducing this debt that threatens our fiscal solvency.  Instead of empowering the government, we need to unleash the hard work and innovative spirit of the American people, providing an opportunity for all.  Rather than subsidizing companies such as Solyndra, our nation would benefit from promoting the exploration, development, and the delivery of new, secure energy sources.   These are the real solutions for encouraging economic growth and job creation.  The American people have surmounted every obstacle that has confronted our nation, and we will do it again by believing in ourselves and the American way.”
