STEARNS' REACTION TO U.S. SUPREME COURT DECISIONS IMPACTING FILE SHARING AND COPYRIGHTS

"Today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was correct in 2002 in classifying broadband cable modem as a deregulated information service. I support this decision, but this case further proves that our telecommunications laws are in serious need of modernization and reform. A bill that I have introduced with Rep. Rick Boucher, HR 214, will create a new, flexible regulatory regime that will encompass these types of broadband services, and which will install regulatory and legal certainty in this field."

"Today's unanimous ruling in the Grokster case protects intellectual property rights from deliberate infringement. However, I am concerned how this case affects ordinary Americans who use products whose purpose is not intended to be used for copyright infringement, such as DVDs for personal use. As Chairman of the Commerce, Trade & Consumer Protection Subcommittee, I held a hearing on peer-to-peer file sharing, and I will continue to follow this issue."
