STEARNS' REACTION TO PRESIDENT BUSH'S INAUGURAL ADDRESS

"This afternoon, President Bush outlined the importance of freedom, not just for the American people, but for the future of the world as well. I agree that liberty at home depends on liberty in other lands, and that the force of human freedom is advancing throughout the world.  He noted that our nation is confronting the mortal threat of terror that feeds on tyranny and oppression.  I look forward to the elections in Iraq, in which tens on millions of people will move toward self-governance.  As the Iraqi people embrace freedom, they also will take on the burdens and responsibilities of that freedom, allowing for America to withdraw from that nation."

"The President also addressed the unfinished work at home, noting the need for greater economic independence among the American people.  He spoke of expanding the ownership of retirement savings and of health insurance, both laudable goals that I support.  Specifically, I am concerned about the long-term condition of Social Security.  I am committed to ensuring that current beneficiaries and those nearing retirement face no reduction in benefits, while preserving this vital program for future generations."
