STEARNS PRESENTED WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA'S "OUTSTANDING CONGRESSIONAL SERVICE" AWARD

UF HONORS STEARNS FOR HIS YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE UNIVERSITY

Washington, Aug 20, 2008 - The University of Florida today presented the “Outstanding Congressional Service” Award to Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala). This award recognizes Stearns for his strong support of the University and for his success in securing support for the institution’s programs. “I am grateful to represent the University of Florida in Congress and I am deeply honored to receive this award,” said Stearns. “Throughout my tenure, I have had a strong relationship with the University and have built a strong record of success in securing support for its research and educational programs. I look forward to continuing to serve the University community.”

Stearns obtained funding for the University’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Science to conduct biotech research to improve crop yields and to restore the school’s “Upward Bound” minority-education outreach program. In addition, Stearns successfully sought federal support for research at the University on citrus canker, on replacing petroleum with renewable energy sources, and on technology to assist the elderly at home.
