30-YEAR-OLD CHURCH BUILT OF REINFORCED CONCRETE COMPLETELY DESTROYED

Washington, Feb 2, 2007 - Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala) today toured the disaster site in Lady Lake with Florida Governor Charlie Crist. "We saw firsthand the devastation from the tornados, met with the pastor of the Lady Lake Church of God, and viewed the damaged to the adjoining homes now without any utilities. In addition, I toured two emergency shelters in Lady Lake, the North Lake Presbyterian Church and the Villages Elementary School."

Stearns put Lady Lake Town Manager Bill Vance in touch by telephone with the Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, David Paulison, to express the urgent need for temporary shelter for the disaster victims. Stearns also saw to it that an 89-year resident with medical conditions and confined to a wheelchair received food and shelter after losing her home and possessions. "I am very pleased that I was able to assist this dear woman," added Stearns. "I also was amazed by the positive outlook of those in the shelters, they are eager to rebuild their lives. While I was there, Wal-Mart started delivering 200 beds for the victims. In addition, I commend the outstanding law enforcement officers from Lake County, Marion County, and the State in providing protection and support, and in putting together the Command Center."
