STEARNS JOINS HOUSE IN APPROVING LOBBYING REFORM LEGISLATION

BILL REQUIRES DISCLOSURE AND CRIMINAL PENALTIES FOR VIOLATING LOBBYING RULES

Washington, May 3, 2006 - “The American people are right to expect accountability and transparency from their representatives in their dealings with lobbyists,” said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala). “We must remain mindful that it is our job to conduct the business of the people and not of special interests. This measure allows the people to make their voices heard while curbing the potential for abuse by lobbyists.”

The House today approved H.R. 4975, the Lobbying Accountability and Transparency Act. This measure enhances disclosure of lobbying activities and the giving of gifts to members and staff, sets criminal penalties of up to 3 to 5 years for violating lobbying rules, and bans privately-funded travel. In addition, it requires that Members of Congress convicted of bribery, acting as a foreign agent, or of committing fraud against the United States to forfeit their retirement benefits and pension.
