STEARNS JOINS HOUSE IN APPROVING DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION BILL

MEASURE INCLUDES 3.9% MILITARY PAYRAISE, PROHIBITION ON PERMANENT BASES IN IRAQ, AND BARS PROPOSED TRICARE FEES

Washington, Sep 24, 2008 - “The men and women of our military perform a difficult task with bravery and outstanding proficiency,” said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Sixth). “They have never let the American people down and they need to know that they have our unwavering support. This measure authorizes the funding and programs essential to empowering them to complete their missions.”

Stearns joined today in approving S. 3001, the National Defense Authorization Act, which authorizes funding for the Department for Defense and for ongoing military operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. Explained Stearns, “S. 3001 authorizes a 3.9% military payraise and extends certain special pay and bonuses for active duty and reserve personnel. It also prohibits establishing permanent bases in Iraq and the use of funds designated for training Iraqi security forces from being used on infrastructure in Iraq.”

The measure authorizes funds to improve military living conditions and healthcare. “It includes $3.2 billion for new family housing, additional tuition assistance and training for military spouses, and expands the annuity for surviving spouses of military personnel who die while on active duty,” added Stearns. “In addition, it authorizes $25 billion for military healthcare programs and blocks the Administration’s plan to raise TRICARE and pharmacy user fees and deductibles for servicemembers and military retirees.”
