STEARNS JOINS FIRST STEP TO CONTROL FEDERAL SPENDING, VOTES TO CUT HOUSE BUDGET

FIVE-PERCENT CUT IN LEADERSHIP, COMMITTEE, AND MEMBER BUDGETS

Washington, Jan 6 - “Just as millions of struggling American households are doing with less, so should Congress,” said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Sixth).  “The federal government’s reliance on ever-increasing spending must end and Congress should take the lead in controlling the debt.  Although modest, these reductions are only the first steps in establishing an era of fiscal responsibility. I am reminded of a quote from the moral philosopher Adam Smith, ‘What is prudence in the conduct of every private family, can scarce be folly in that of a great kingdom?’”

Under its new leadership, Congress voted today to reduce every congressional office budget by five percent.   Explained Stearns, “While reducing every budget by five percent, this measure also decreases the budget of the Appropriations Committee by nine percent.  The Appropriations Committee is responsible for approving 13 major spending bills, and this cut should emphasize to them the need for fiscal restraint.  I myself will return nearly 11 percent of my operating budget for this year.”

Added Stearns, “We will find additional savings throughout the year in administrative and support offices for Congress.  This will remain an ongoing process to identify and eliminate unnecessary spending.”
