Washington, Oct 1, 2009 - “The Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) is a vital economic resource for the area, and we need to improve the safety and the efficiency of the Port or vessels with deep drafts will use nearby out-of-state facilities,” stated Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Sixth). “I requested funding under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to complete the Jacksonville Harbor Deepening project, and the House today approved $922,200 in support of this effort. With completion of this project, JAXPORT’s three cargo terminals will each share a 40-foot depth.”

The House today approved H.R. 3183, the Energy & Water Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2010. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recommended the dredging to correct both safety and economic risks posed by the shallow channel.
