STEARNS: "DEADLINES FOR DISASTER ASSISTANCE FOR TORNADO DAMAGE ARE IN APRIL"

VICTIMS HAVE 60 DAYS FROM THE DATE OF DISASTER DECLARATION TO FILE FOR ASSISTANCE

Washington, Mar 13, 2007 - "The victims of the February tornadoes in Florida have 60 days from the date of the disaster declaration to file for assistance," stated Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala)." Residents and business owners in Lake, Sumter, Seminole, and Volusia Counties who suffered damage must apply for assistance no later than April 4, 2007. I urge those who need help to file their applications immediately."

The victims of the Christmas tornadoes in Volusia County have until April 9, 2007, since there was a delay in declaring a disaster resulting from those tornadoes.

Added Stearns, "The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provides two ways to file an application. By calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing impaired, and through the FEMA web site www.fema.gov. Applicants may call from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Again, you must file before the deadline to receive any assistance."
