STEARNS' COMMENTS ON THE STATE OF THE UNION

APPLAUDS PRESIDENT'S FOCUS ON ECONOMIC SECURITY AT HOME AND DEMOCRACY ABROAD

Washington, Feb 2, 2005 - "Tonight, the President outlined a bold vision of ownership and economic security at home, and the expansion of democracy overseas. He identified the challenges and opportunities in building greater individual economic security, and in strengthening the national economy. I strongly agree with his call for enacting tax reform that makes our code fairer and more simple to reduce the barriers to new economic growth."

"In addition, the President explained the future threat to the Social Security system and a reasonable approach to strengthening the system for all Americans. I am committed to ensuring that current beneficiaries, and those nearing retirement, receive their full benefits. I believe that we should allow younger workers to contribute toward a personal account that they own, as long as it is coupled with deficit reduction measures that enhance the long-term condition of Social Security."

"The President also paid a moving tribute to our nation's military personnel who serve on the front line in the War on Terror, and who have liberated millions of oppressed men, women and children. I was especially moved by President Bush's tribute to Marine Corps Sergeant Byron Norwood, whose mother attended the State of the Union. In a letter to the President she wrote, 'When Byron was home the last time I said that I wanted to protect him like I had since he was born. He just hugged me and said: You've done your job Mom. Now it's my turn to protect you.' Sergeant Norwood was killed during the assault on Fallujah."

"I was struck by the symbolism when Taleb al-Suhail, a human rights and democracy advocate in Iraq, reached out and hugged Byron's mother. This underscored America's willingness to sacrifice for freedom and our security, and the gratitude of the oppressed for their liberators. We must stand with those who yearn for freedom, and we will complete our mission in Iraq with honor."
