STATEMENT OF REP. CLIFF STEARNS ON THE THEFT OF VETERANS PERSONAL DATA

"Nearly 27 million veterans may be affected by this security breach that could compromise sensitive, personal information. I expect VA's inspector general and the FBI to work closely together so that we can identify and eliminate the flaws that allowed this leak and prosecute any criminal acts. And, the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, of which I am a Member, will examine this incident in the context of previous data compromises, to ensure that veterans' information is safeguarded."

"While at this point there is no evidence that any missing data has been used illegally, the VA recommends all veterans be extra vigilant and to carefully monitor bank statements, credit card statements and any statements relating to recent financial transactions. If you notice unusual or suspicious activity, you should report it immediately to the financial institution involved and contact the Federal Trade Commission for further guidance. In addition, the VA has established a toll-free call center where veterans can get more information --- 1-800-FED-INFO (333-4636)."

"As the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, & Consumer Protection of the Energy & Commerce Committee, I have led in the issue of consumer data protection and privacy. Unfortunately, data breaches like this highlight the need for my legislation: H.R. 4127, the Data Accountability and Trust Act (DATA). This bill, which the Energy & Commerce Committee approved March 29, goes to the heart of this problem of the critical need to protect consumers' personal information."

"I have put links on my website, www.house.gov/stearns, to useful information at the VA."
