STATEMENT OF REP. CLIFF STEARNS ON THE 2008 STATE OF THE UNION

"Tonight, the President addressed the two major challenges facing our nation - revitalizing the economy and protecting our freedoms from foreign threats. Although we have entered a period of economic uncertainty, we still control our future. In addition to explaining how a stimulus package will strengthen our economy, he outlined the need to extend the tax cuts we have enacted. These tax cuts have helped generate 52 straight months of economic growth, and without that extension 116 million Americans will face tax increases averaging $1,800. I especially applaud his assault on pork barrel spending represented by earmarks."

"He also talked about the need to succeed in the War on Terror. We are making progress in Iraq and Afghanistan, and we need to press on to victory. I also commend his call to enact the recommendations for our Wounded Warriors; we all have an obligation to assist those injured in service to our nation. I am committed to re-energizing our economy and achieving victory in the War on Terror, and I will work with the President and other members of Congress in reaching these goals."
