STATEMENT OF REP. CLIFF STEARNS IN RESPONSE TO STEROID AGREEMENT REACHED BY MLB AND THE UNION

"The agreement reached today still must be ratified sometime next year. This is a promise and not a policy. It would be preferable to avoid legislation and to have the leagues and the unions agree on uniform testing standards and tougher penalties, but that has been glacial in coming. I fear that this could be more of the same, good intentions with little or no follow through."

"I first held a hearing on the use in sports of performance enhancing drugs in 2003. This was followed by a number of hearings on steroids specifically. Steroid use undermines the integrity of professional sports and reverberates among our young people who see no harm in using steroids. Using steroids is also a crime. Instead of promises, this nation needs concrete action; we need legislation to curb steroids in sports."
