REP. CLIFF STEARNS COMMENTS ON THE PRESIDENT'S NEW STRATEGY FOR IRAQ

"I am encouraged that the President recognizes past mistakes; this is essential in plotting a new course to success. It is clear that Iraq remains the central battleground in the War on Terror, a fact echoed by Osama bin Laden and his al Qeada terrorists. That is why it is essential that we and our allies stay committed to victory."

"I have long called for setting milestones to gauge progress in Iraq, and I applaud the President for understanding the need for metrics in the struggle. Clearly, we need a change in strategy and we must remain flexible in adapting to the evolving situation in Iraq. In addition, I am committed to fully funding our troops as they wage the war on terrorism."

"I would prefer seeing more Iraqi troops deployed to Baghdad to secure the capital. However, if more American troops will lead to success, then I am willing to consider this request if it is backed up by a new plan that will produce results."
