REACTION OF REP. CLIFF STEARNS TO THE PRESIDENT'S REMARKS ON IRAQ

COMMENDS THE TROOPS

Washington, Aug 31, 2010 -

“Although the Iraqi government and people have far more to accomplish, that nation no longer poses an international or regional threat. This progress, allowing the drawdown of our troops in Iraq to 50,000, is a significant milestone resulting from the dedication and professionalism of our military men and women.  I thank them for their sacrifice and join in mourning our lost service members.  In addition, we have an obligation to meet the needs of our veterans as they return to their lives at home, especially the wounded.”

“I supported the proposal of General Petraeus for the surge, which was approved by President Bush.  Although opposed by many at the time, this surge is the main reason for the sharp drop in violence and discord in Iraq.  However, we still have a mission in Iraq and our troops face continuing threats as they prepare Iraqi forces to secure that nation.I pray for the success of their mission and their safe return.”
