NEWS CONFERENCE ON STEROID LEGISLATION

STEARNS TO OUTLINE BILL'S PROVISIONS ON TUESDAY, APRIL 26TH

Washington, Apr 25, 2005 - "Alleged and admitted use of steroids by professional athletes call into question the very integrity of sports and competition," stated Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL), Chairman of the Commerce, Trade & Consumer Protection Subcommittee.  "High school athletes and other amateurs emulate their role models in professional sports, and this includes using steroids.  As a result of my hearing last month, it is clear that professional sports need stronger standards.  Even the International Chess Federation adopted the World Anti-Doping Agency's drug code two years ago to subject chess players to the same standards as Olympic athletes."

This bill creates a national testing policy for professional sports and includes serious mandatory penalties for positive use of steroids," explained Stearns.  "Although I will work with the leagues in implementing these standards, they must act decisively to end the use of these drugs."

On Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at 1:00 p.m., Stearns will outline his legislation addressing the use of steroids in sports during a news conference in room 2218 Rayburn House Office Building.  The Commerce, Trade & Consumer Protection Subcommittee has jurisdiction over sports and will take up consideration of the Stearns' bill.  Chairman Barton of the Energy & Commerce Committee and other supporters of the legislation are expected to participate.  For additional information or to confirm your attendance, please contact Paul Flusche in the office of Rep. Stearns at 202-225-5744.
