HOUSE APPROVES BILL HONORING GENERAL FRANCIS MARION WHO SERVED IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR

MARION COUNTY NAMED IN HONOR OF GENERAL MARION

Washington, Mar 5, 2007 - "I live in Marion County, Florida, which was named in honor of Brigadier General Francis Marion," said Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala). "General Marion commanded the Williamsburg Militia Revolutionary force in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War. His attacks on enemy supply lines delayed the advance of British forces. This tactic of quick raids on British convoys and then disappearing into the swamps earned him the nickname of 'The Swamp Fox.' I am glad to see Congress join my home county in honoring General Marion."

The House today approved H.R. 497, the Brigadier General Francis Marion Memorial Act. This measure authorizes a commemorative work, without federal funding, in the District of Columbia to honor General Marion.
