  1. General Motors continues to repay its taxpayer investment, as it was announced this week that the Treasury Department planned to sell its remaining ownership share over the next 15 months. There is no doubt that the bailout of the auto industry saved hundreds of thousands, if not millions of jobs across America, and played a crucial part in our economic recovery.

    • Please work harder against the Boehner thugs. If you can take back the house & defeat the blue dogs in your own party--you can defeat the NRA--KKK--ALEC axis of Evil!

    • Did you know the boy in Newtown, Conn. had a form of autism? This was reported on a couple of the many reports of this incedent. Now why would any parent, knowing their child has a form of autism, take the child to a gun range and teach them how to shoot a firearm and rifles. There are pictures proving this. And why would the parent keep firearms in the house where this child lives? This is the problem. Much tighter background checks are needed. If you apply to buy a firearm, we have the right to investigate your family, who lives in your home, what is their mental history, what is your mental history. If we find any indescretions in your background check, you cannot and will not purchase a firearm from any dealer in this state or any other state. we need someone with guts to stand up and say this is how its going to be. Thats it!! Live with it or not. Sherman Strickrott

  3. Today is the anniversary of our repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. By ending this discriminatory policy, we allow all dedicated Americans to serve in the military. I was so proud to support its repeal.

  5. It is plain from the Speaker's failure to get a majority of his conference to support his own proposal, that he must instead move to a balanced plan that if it will not attract a majority of GOP members, can instead pass the House with vote...s from members of both parties. A bipartisan approach has not been tried by the Speaker and is the only way to avoid the fiscal cliff. It is disturbing that we have adjourned for the week without resolving this matter, and it is imperative that we come back shortly, reach a reasonable compromise and avoid the dire consequences of failure.See More

  7. Yesterday, the House passed Katie's Law - a commonsense bipartisan bill that I authored. Just as we fingerprint arrestees, it makes sense to collect a DNA profile when someone is arrested for a violent felony, and this bill will encourage s...tates around the nation to join California and the 24 other states that have adopted arrestee testing. It’s my hope that the Senate will take up and pass this legislation in the remaining days of the session.See More
  8. On this day last year, the final U.S. troops pulled out of Iraq. For nearly 9 years, our nation's bravest men and women served there with courage and dedication in the face of unspeakable violence. Let us never forget their sacrifices and continue to honor them by keeping our promises to our veterans and their families.
  9. It was great to participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Lane Lighting Ceremony in Altadena. For nearly 100 years, Christmas Tree Lane has brightened up our communities during the holiday season and I was honored to be a part of it.

  10. The Safe Drinking Water Act was signed into law 38 years ago today in 1974. While this landmark legislation vastly improved the quality of our drinking water, there is much more work that needs to be done still. Earlier this year, I urged the EPA to set a national drinking water regulation to protect families and children from the Chromium 6 in our drinking water and introduced the Protecting Pregnant Women and Children from Hexavalant Chromium Act. In 2012, it’s unconscionable to think that our drinking water is not 100% safe and we need to keep up the fight.

This weekend, I had the great privilege to meet with Caltech President Jean-Lou Chameau and Tigran Sargsyan, the Prime Minister of Armenia, to discuss ways to bring the next stage of high-tech industry development to Armenia and explore new collaborations between our universities and talented students and professors around the world.

  12. I'm just horrified at the shooting today at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. As a parent of young children, I grieve for the families who lost loved ones and those going through the agony of waiting for more information about their kids. This is beyond any parent's worst nightmare. The thoughts and prayers of the nation are with them.
  13. I had the opportunity to meet Kevin and Julia Dixon, and their daughter Janel, earlier this week at the La Cañada Flintridge Festival in Lights. About 100 local children attended the event and got to meet Santa - and a few of his reindeer!

  14. With its latest provocative missile tests, North Korea is playing a dangerous game in one of the world's most volatile regions. Yesterday’s launch came despite warnings from the international community and in direct violation of multiple U....N. Security Council resolutions, and the United States will be working closely with our regional partners, as well as the other members of the Security Council to fashion a response. There is concern among observers of the DPRK, that the Pyongyang government will be tempted to increase the regional tension even further by testing a nuclear device – this must be stopped.

Nuclear proliferation and the danger of a nuclear terrorist incident remain the greatest national security threats we face. Over the past four years, the Obama Administration has made great strides with nonproliferation – increasing pressure on Iran, and working with the international community to reduce stockpiles of nuclear weapons and material. We must continue this proactive drive, and prevent more rogue nations and actors from increasing worldwide nuclear tensions and risks.

  18. Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to meet with Brian Banks and Justin Brooks of the California Innocence Project and hear Brian’s incredible story. In High School, Brian was a top football prospect for USC until false accusations wer...e levied against him. At 17, he was forced to accept a plea deal without the counsel of his parents and ultimately spent over five years in prison, despite being innocent. After contacting the California Innocence Project and their subsequent investigation, the person who leveled the original accusations admitted it was all a fabrication. Brian was released and exonerated earlier this year by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mark Kim. Since then, he has resumed following his dream by trying out for several NFL teams. After hearing his incredible story of strength and perseverance, I’m hopeful that we will see him on the gridiron one day.

The California Innocence Project reviews over 2,000 claims of innocence each year and looks to exonerate those who were convicted of crimes they did not commit. Visit http://californiainnocenceproject.org/ for more information.

  20. I’m incredibly proud to see crewmembers from Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena Water and Power agenices bringing personnel and equipment back to the East Coast to restore power after Hurricane Sandy. The recovery effort in the areas affected looks to be long and arduous, but by coming together, as Americans have, we can help those most in need and meet the challenges that lie ahead.
  21. With the Supreme Court’s decision to hear arguments on the constitutionality of California’s Proposition 8 which defines marriage as exclusively between a man and a women, I hope we have taken another step towards guaranteeing marriage equality under the law. I hope that the Court upholds the decision by the Court of Appeals, finding that Prop 8 was unconstitutionally discriminatory towards same-s...ex couples who simply want to exercise their basic human right to marry the person of their choosing. I also hope the Supreme Court strikes down the Defense of Marriage Act, which has prevented many couples from enjoying the full rights of marriage.

I look forward to the day when the right of any couple to marry is guaranteed everywhere in the nation.

  22. Really positive news this morning as it was announced that our economy added 147,000 private sector jobs in November, causing the unemployment rate to drop to 7.7%. But while our economy continues to create jobs, it’s clear that we still ha...ve much more work to do. Congress should build on this positive economic news and resolve the "fiscal cliff." This precarious situation has made businesses, both small and large, hesitant to commit resources towards new jobs and wage increases.See More

I was deeply distressed to learn of the hateful and vitriolic... messages that the church has received. I wish both the Church and MPAC a successful convention and know that they will not be deterred by the hateful speech of the intolerant.See More

  28. Today is World AIDS Day. By raising awareness across the globe, we can continue the remarkable results witnessed in the past decade. We’ve already seen a 50% reduction in the rate of new HIV infections in 25 low and middle-income countries, but by pushing for more prevention and treatment, I’m confident that we can see an AIDS free generation in the near future.
