(Washington, DC) This morning, Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3) issued the following statement in support of the recent decision by the Department of Veterans Affairs to release emergency aid checks to veterans due to benefit from the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill.

Over 230,000 veterans are estimated to have applied for Post 9/11 G.I. Bill assistance, but the disbursement of aid to some has been delayed due to administrative issues.

“I applaud Secretary Shinseki for promptly addressing this issue and working to ensure that our nation always fulfills its commitment to our veterans,” said Congressman Yarmuth.

VA Secretary Eric Shinseki announced this weekend that veterans currently enrolled in colleges and universities who have not yet received assistance to which they are entitled can collect a check of up to $3,000 from their local Veterans Affairs Regional Office. In Louisville, checks will be distributed beginning Friday at the office located at 321 West Main Street  to veterans who bring a copy of their current course schedule, eligibility certificate, and photo identification.

As part of the benefits package created by the Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act, student veterans can attend in-state public universities at no charge and private colleges at heavily reduced rates. The provisions of that legislation were approved last year, with Congressman Yarmuth’s support.
