Yarmuth and Secretary Napolitano Meet to Discuss Homeland Security, H1N1 Preparedness

(Louisville, KY) This afternoon, Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3) joined United States Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and leaders from our local business community for a roundtable discussion on how Homeland Security issues impact Louisville and its private sector. Among the other topics discussed, Secretary Napolitano briefed Congressman Yarmuth and other participants on how the federal government is preparing for any potential outbreak of the H1N1 flu.

“I am grateful that Secretary Napolitano took the time to speak to concerned community leaders about how the federal government is acting to keep our nation safe,” said Congressman Yarmuth. “She stressed the importance of ensuring our entire community – and especially our seniors and other vulnerable populations – are fully educated about how to combat the H1N1 virus.”

Secretary Napolitano told Congressman Yarmuth and the other guests that she would focus on guaranteeing that local medical facilities have the resources they need to combat the spread of the flu while urging an educational effort to ensure citizens are aware of how to stay healthy.

Among the best practices for preventing the spread of H1N1 flu among  local businesses and organizations include:

  • Coordinate telecommuting plans
  • Keep basic responsibilities in writing so all employees can follow them
  • Encourage sick employees to stay home
  • For employees with children, ensure child care arrangements are made in the case of school cancellations
