House Passes Bill to Begin Iraq Troop Withdrawal in 30 Days, Complete by End of 2008

(Washington, DC) Today, the House of Representatives approved H.R. 4156, The Orderly and Responsible Iraq Redeployment Appropriations Act.  The legislation fully funds the immediate needs of American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, requires redeployment to begin within 30 days of the legislation’s enactment, and sets December 30, 2008 as a target for withdrawal.  Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3) released the following statement.

“Today, the House voted to support the troops twice, by providing the best possible resources for their time in Iraq, and more importantly, by giving them what they have been missing for almost five years: A path home.  I hope the President will now understand that an exit strategy is what our brave men and women in uniform deserve, our nation needs, and the American people continue to demand.”

The bill passed by a vote of 218-203 and now heads to the Senate for consideration.
