Tram - On the Grounds
The tram is a professionally driven, taped tour, which highlights the 446 acres of the U.S. National Arboretum’s gardens, collections and natural areas. Our 48-passenger open air tram is equipped to accommodate two wheelchair users. It also features a convenient storage bay for strollers and other carry-on items.

During the 35-minute non-stop ride, you will hear an informative, taped narrative about the Arboretum, its history, mission, and research, and the display gardens and collections. Please allow time at the conclusion of your tour for an in-depth visit to some of the collections.

Private Guided Tour Information

Reserve a guided tour for your club, organization, society, or group. We offer two types of tours: The Windshield Tour consists of an overview of the grounds on transportation provided by your group. The vehicle will stop at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum and the National Herb Garden since these collections are not clearly visible from the road. Your group may choose to substitute two other stops, but must do so prior to the tour. The Walking Tour gives an up close and personal view of the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum, The National Herb Garden, the Administration Building terrace and pool, and the Friendship Garden. During both tours, you will learn about the National Arboretum’s history, collections, and research.

To request a guided tour, your group must consist of 10 or more and be 5th graders or older.

Tour Hours:

Guided tours may be scheduled on any day of the year except December 25th, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The tour must be reserved at least 3 weeks in advance.

Fee: $50.00
Payment must be made at least 2 weeks prior to the date of the reserved tour by cash, check, or money order in U.S. dollars. If your group needs to cancel, we ask that at least 24 hours notice be given. Refunds are not given unless the tour is cancelled by the U.S. National Arboretum.
