Hoyer borrows joke from former Sen. Sarbanes

By Judy Kurtz - 12/12/12 02:27 PM ET

WE HEAR: Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) took a page out of former Sen. Paul Sarbanes’s (D-Md.) joke book when he made a crack at last week’s Washington Business Hall of Fame black-tie gala.

When the congressman approached the microphone at the Washington Hilton to deliver some remarks, the mic was on the fritz and wasn’t working. Hoyer quipped that Sarbanes, who wasn’t there that night, recently joked that the audience members sitting in the back of the venue wouldn’t be able to hear him. But, Hoyer cracked, that wouldn’t be a problem since they were likely strategically sitting far away from the podium anyway so they wouldn’t have to listen to him speak.

The awards ceremony raises more than $1 million each year for Junior Achievement’s financial literacy programs for students in the Washington area.
