Earlier today, Rep. Jim Langevin (RI-02) submitted for the record the following stayment regarding a payroll tax cut extension package:

The Honorable James Langevin
Statement on the Extension of the Payroll Tax Cut Package
February 16, 2012

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased that House and Senate negotiators have agreed on a payroll tax cut extension package, which will provide a much needed boost to our constituents at a critical time.

Not only does this package extend a tax cut that benefits middle class families, it also averts drastic cuts to Medicare doctors to ensure our seniors have access to the care they deserve.

Just as importantly, the agreement will extend unemployment benefits, which are crucial for working families as they search for new opportunities in a tight job market.   This assistance will be especially welcome in my home state of Rhode Island, where our 10.8 percent unemployment rate remains one of the nation’s highest.

I encourage my colleagues to pass this package quickly.  Let’s not raise taxes on the middle class.  Let’s help those who are most vulnerable during these trying times.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker, and I yield back the balance of my time.
