  • The 13th Congressional District & Map

Ohio's 13th Congressional District truly is a great place to live, raise a family and do business. Congresswoman Sutton has lived most of her life in and around the communities that make up much of the district, and she is proud to represent the people and places she knows and loves so much.

Originally nicknamed the “Turnpike District”, the 13th Congressional District’s unique shape traces across the shoreline of Lake Erie in Lorain County, captures the “Emerald Necklace” of the Cleveland MetroParks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and extends south to include the Portage Lakes State Park in Summit County. The 13th Congressional District is also home to institutions of higher learning such as Lorain County Community College and The University of Akron.

The 13th Congressional District stretches across four of Northeast Ohio’s most populous counties, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Medina, and Summit, and it includes all or some of over thirty communities.

Education

Congresswoman Sutton believes that investing in our education system is one of the most important things we can do to grow and strengthen our workforce, as well as secure our well-being as a nation. Her leadership on education issues began during her eight-year tenure in the Ohio State House, and it continues to this day. Congresswoman Sutton’s record reflects support for modernizing and repairing older schools, making college more affordable by increasing the maximum Pell Grant, preventing teacher layoffs in struggling local school districts, and allocating additional funding for special education.

As part of the landmark health insurance reform vote, Congresswoman Sutton voted for the single largest investment in college aid in history. The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act (SAFRA) expands access to an affordable college education and builds a world-class community college system – at no cost to taxpayers. Her support for the legislation brought $74,554,215 to the 13th Congressional District over 10 years and increased the maximum annual Pell Grant scholarship.

In August of 2010, Congresswoman Sutton voted for legislation that protected 346 teachers’ jobs in the 13th Congressional District and 5,500 teachers’ jobs in Ohio. Recognizing the importance of education programs to our children’s lives, she has lent her support to Head Start, child nutrition initiatives, after-school programs and STEM initiatives promoting the importance of science, technology, engineering and math programs.

Based on Congresswoman Sutton’s passion and dedication to a strong education system and supporting educators, she was awarded the Friend of Education Award from the Barberton Education Association and an “A” Grade from the National Education Association’s Legislative Report Card.

Congresswoman Sutton is a member of the Community College Caucus, Green Schools Caucus, the House Afterschool Caucus and the STEM Caucus.
