(Washington, DC) The full House of Representatives has approved Congressman John Yarmuth’s (KY-3) request for $600,000 in funding for Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital and $100,000 for the National Center for Family Literacy, moving the funding one step closer to becoming law. The projects are part of the FY2010 Labor-Health and Human Services-Education Appropriations bill that passed by a vote of 264-153.

“This funding will help Louisville confront two of our most significant challenges by investing in both our health care infrastructure and programs that better prepare our residents for the workforce,” said Congressman Yarmuth. “I am so pleased that the House approved this important support for our community.”

The $600,000 for Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital is for the purchase of the latest interventional imaging technology, providing South End residents with access to more efficient and less-invasive tests and treatments for cancer.

Funding for Louisville’s National Center for Family Literacy will support Family Education Career Training programs, which provide career skills and literacy training to those in search of a job.

The bill must now be approved by the full Senate before heading to the President for his signature.
