(Washington, DC) Today, the House of Representatives approved Congressman John Yarmuth’s (KY-3) amendment requiring NASA to make global warming data, critical research, and other scientific discoveries available to the public.

“The taxpayers are funding government studies everyday, and they should fully benefit from the results.  To proceed otherwise is a disservice to science and to the American people,” Congressman Yarmuth said.  “These provisions would further scientific progress by enabling data sharing between governmental agencies, colleges, universities, and grant recipients.”

This follows a series of Oversight & Government reform hearings last year in which Congressman Yarmuth and his fellow committee members discovered that research and information was suppressed in order to conceal the causes and effects of global warming from the American people.

Yarmuth’s amendment will ensure that NASA responds to a series of recommendations made by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) that are intended to prevent future manipulation of science. 

The GAO and NAS recommend:
•    Information supporting major published results should be made available to other researchers.
•    An infrastructure must be put in place to make data accessible through unrestricted archives.
•    Data should be made available without delay to allow for analysis and publication of results.
•    Prices of accessing data should not exceed the marginal cost of reproduction and distribution.
