Congressman John Yarmuth visits Big Brothers Big Sisters

 

Congressman John Yarmuth visits Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana at Shelby Elementary School

Louisville, KY- On Friday, February 22, 2008 from 3:00 pm – 3:30 pm, Congressman John Yarmuth will be visiting Shelby Elementary School (735 Ziegler St., Louisville, KY) to see firsthand the positive effect the Big Brothers Big Sisters program has had in the local school system.  Shelby Elementary School is one of several schools in the Jefferson County School district that has a school-based program where volunteers from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana visit their Littles at school once a week.  Principal Patti Cosby says that she is very pleased with the positive effective she has seen among students participating in this program.

Jeri Swinton, the Executive Director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana, will also be present to visit with the participating Bigs and Littles as well as personally thank Congressman Yarmuth for his continued support of the program.  Swinton says, “Congressman Yarmuth has played a very important role in our being able to reach out to more young people in our community.  Recently, with the Congressman’s support, our organization was able to receive a 3-year federal mentoring grant that began September of 2007.  This grant, along with other grants and endowments, will allow us to reach our goal of serving over 2010 children by the year 2010.”

This Saturday, February 23, 2008 at 1:00 pm at Rose Bowl Lanes (2217
Goldsmith Lane), Congressman Yarmuth will be joining Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana at the BB&T Big/Little Bowl for Kids’ Sake event.  The Congressman will be present to meet and greet the volunteers and children in the program, as well as bowl a few games.
