LANCE TO REJECT SO-CALLED "CLEAN" DEBT CEILING HIKE

7th District Lawmaker Will Oppose President's Request To Raise Debt Limit Without Meaningful Spending Reforms

WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Leonard Lance (NJ-07) said today he will vote against President Obama's request to raise the nation’s debt limit from $14.3 trillion to $16.7 trillion because the measure does not include meaningful spending cuts and fiscal reforms.  The U.S. House is expected to vote on the President's debt limit increase request later this evening.

“I fully expect the U.S. House of Representatives to overwhelming reject the President’s call for a 'clean' debt limit increase because his request is absent of much-needed spending reforms to help get our Nation’s fiscal house in order,” Lance said.

The House legislation would allow government borrowing to reach $16.7 trillion, but it does not include any steps that Lance and other members of Congress have demanded to restrain future spending.

“Congress and the President can work together in a bipartisan capacity to tackle the debt ceiling issue by including meaningful spending reforms, substantial reductions in current spending and safeguards that will restrict future spending, such as the balanced budget amendment and spending caps.  Failure to pass a serious plan will damage our current economic recovery efforts and further burden our children and grandchildren for future generations to come,” Lance concluded.
