SUMMIT, NJ – Congressman Leonard Lance (NJ-07) today announced that the Summit Fire Department received a $25,650 federal security grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to purchase new safety equipment.

Lance made the announcement at a news conference at the Summit Fire Department with Mayor Jordan Glatt, community leaders and officials from the fire department. Lance said the federal grant funds would help underwrite the cost for purchasing three new thermal imaging cameras to help firefighters locate people in burning buildings.

“State-of-the-art, thermal imaging cameras will help Summit firefighters quickly locate victims in a burning building or home,” said Lance. “The new cameras will also provide an additional layer of safety to firefighters by allowing them to know exactly where to go – so that they can quickly get in and out.”

Mayor Jordan Glatt also said that the new cameras will help protect the victims and firefighters on the jobs. According to local officials the department includes 32 career firefighters, 15 volunteer firefighters and last year the department responded to over 2,000 calls.

“Summit’s firefighters are hard working and dedicated to keeping our community safe,” said Mayor Jordan Glatt. “Congressman Lance understands the important roles our first responders play in our community and we appreciate his support.”

Earlier this year, Lance held his annual workshop for Seventh Congressional District first responders and local town officials to learn about the availability of federal security funding and he regularly assists local officials in applying for the funds.
