7^th District Lawmaker Calls For Spending Offset for Unemployment Benefits Extension

 

WASHINGTON– Congressman Leonard Lance (NJ-07) issued the following statement after the House approved a $33.9 billion measure to extend unemployment benefits to the 2.5 million out-of-work Americans by a vote of 272 to 152:

“I support extending unemployment insurance for the millions of Americans who are out of work.  

“However the debate in Washington isn’t whether to extend unemployment benefits – both Republicans and Democrats agree this should be done to help those in need.  The debate is whether the $34 billion cost should be paid for with offsetting spending cuts.

“For far too long, Washington’s leaders have chosen a path of fiscally irresponsibly putting forth measures that have driven our debts and deficits to unprecedented levels.  

“Out of control spending on ObamaCare, bank bailouts, and failed stimulus plans is costing trillions of dollars in borrowing.  And today we have added another $34 billion on to the backs of our grandchildren without making the tough choices on how to pay for it.

“It is time for Congress to begin to show some fiscal constraint and begin to reduce spending and refocus on lowering unemployment, creating jobs and jump-starting our ailing economy.”
