LANCE PRAISES PRESIDENT OBAMA FOR SWIFT ACTION ON IRAN SANCTIONS MEASURE

FLEMINGTON, NJ – Congressman Leonard Lance (NJ-07) today praised President Barack Obama for signing tough new sanctions against Iran into law late Friday.

“These new sanctions signed into law by President Obama will act as a strong deterrent to the serious threat of Iran developing nuclear weapons while punishing a regime for documented human rights abuses,” said Lance.  “I appreciate the President's swift action on this important bipartisan legislation.”

The Iran Threat Reduction and Syria Human Rights Act, when coupled with existing restrictions, would impose the toughest set of sanctions ever on Iran.

The new law would levy stiff penalties on energy, shipping and financial firms that engage with Tehran.  Any companies found in violation of the sanctions could lose access to the U.S. market.  It also further expands sanctions against Iranian and Syrian officials for human rights abuses.

As a co-chair of the House Republican Israel Caucus, Congressman Leonard Lance has long advocated for policies to stop Iran from gaining nuclear weapons because of the immediate threat it would pose to Israel, U.S. partners in the region and the world.
