CONGRESSWOMAN JOHNSON'S STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT OBAMA'S ADDRESS TO THE NATION ON BP OIL SPILL

CONGRESSWOMAN JOHNSON’S STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT OBAMA’S ADDRESS TO THE NATION ON BP OIL SPILL

Washington, DC (Wednesday, June 16, 2010) – I stand behind President Obama’s position to hold BP accountable for this horrific environmental catastrophe. Our administration is committed to containing the damage from the BP oil spill and providing the people of the Gulf the help they need for as long as they need it.

I also agree with President Obama’s stand on the need for alternative energy.  The House of Representatives has passed a comprehensive energy and climate bill and there is currently a bipartisan plan in the Senate that would achieve similar goals. The President is committed to working with anyone from either party who is dedicated to finding solutions.

As the Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment, we have held several hearings that revealed BP’s attempt to hide the true size and scope of this oil spill. I will continue to work with President Obama and offer recommendations on what additional safety and environmental standards need to be put in place.
