CONGRESSWOMAN EDDIE BERNICE JOHNSON SUPPORTS ECONOMIC RECOVERY PACKAGE

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will create jobs nationwide

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson today voted in support of the conference report on H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which passed the House by a vote of 246-183-1.

“The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will save or create an estimated 3.5 million jobs, including more than 300,000 in Texas, and provide tax relief to 95 percent of American workers,” Congresswoman Johnson said.  “The investments we make in infrastructure will not only put people to work, they will improve our roads, bridges, mass transit systems and school buildings.  This transformative legislation will provide short-term relief to people who are struggling, and it will transform our economy in the long-term.  The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is a victory for the American people.”

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will provide more than $2.8 billion in infrastructure funding for projects in Texas, including more than $2.2 billion for highways and bridges, more than $370 million for mass transit and more than $176 million for the Clean Water State Revolving Fund.

An analysis by economist Mark Zandi of Moodys.com found that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act could lower the Texas unemployment rate by 1.6 percent.
