Prepare for a Ram-Down: End Result of Blair House Media Show

Bookmark and Share

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Republicans came to legislate; Democrats came to set the stage for ramming a wildly unpopular healthcare takeover bill down the throats of the American public, according to House Republican Conference Secretary John Carter.

"The event turned out exactly as most people expected," Carter said. "Republicans tried to convince the President to drop the controversial House and Senate bills and start writing true bipartisan legislation that the American people support. The President and Democrats instead used the session to threaten that if Republicans would not support their bill, they will violate historic Senate procedure and pass it without the necessary 60 votes. Only now they’ll use the Blair House footage and soundbites to try to convince the public they're being reasonable."

Carter said the next several days will determine the course Democrats will choose. Carter said if the President really wants to pass healthcare reform, he would ask Congress to put together a handful of smaller bipartisan bills to address specific areas such as access to health insurance for people with pre-existing conditions, the ability to purchase health plans across state lines, and medical malpractice reform.

The former Texas judge said those bills, unlike the Democrats' current proposals, would be supported by the majority of Americans and would pass Congress with broad support.
