House Authorizes Life Insurance for Servicemembers and Veterans
09/28/05Washington, Sep 28, 2005 - WASHINGTON D.C. - Today, the Servicemembers' Group Life Enhancement Act of 2005, H.R. 3200, was authorized by the House of Representatives under suspension of the rules. U.S. Representative John R. Carter (TX-31) voted in favor of H.R. 3200, which passed unanimously in the House and Senate.
"Servicemembers and veterans deserve life insurance coverage which they can depend on," said Carter. "Setting an expiration date would be an injustice to the time they served for our nation."
The legislation permanently increases maximum coverage available under the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance and Veterans Group Life Insurance programs from the current $250,000 ceiling to $400,000, which were set to expire on September 30, 2005.
In addition, incremental increases in these life insurance programs will be raised from the current $10,000 to $50,000. The enactment of this legislation will not affect direct spending or revenues.
