Groundbreaking scheduled for SH 195 project

 

     FLORENCE, TX – Federal, state and local officials will kick off the new State Highway 195 project on April 27 at 10:00 AM in Florence. US Congressman John Carter, along with representatives from Fort Hood, the Texas Department of Transportation, Williamson County Commissioner Valerie Covey and the City of Florence will break ground for the project at a ceremony to be held at the Florence Fire Department, 301 S. Patterson Ave.

 

     The $39-million job will rebuild the existing four-lane highway into a four-lane divided section from the Bell/Williamson County line to just south of County Road 233, a distance of about seven miles. This is the first of three SH 195 corridor expansion projects that are designed to enhance safety and improve mobility to the traveling public. Construction on the first phase of the project is expected to take about 36 months.

 

     “I’m happy to see this long-awaited project get underway,” said Congressman Carter. “Not only will it provide a safer highway, but will also create an improved strategic route between Fort Hood and Interstate 35.”

 

     When the remaining projects are completed, SH 195 will be upgraded to a four-lane divided facility with a grassy median all the way from Interstate 35 to the Bell County Line. Approximately 10-thousand vehicles a day use SH 195 in the Florence area, much of which is coming or going to Fort Hood, the largest Army post in the United States.
