CARTER SECURES FUNDING FOR DEFENSE WORK IN ROCKDALE

Washington, DC, Sep 27, 2006 - Representative John Carter (TX-31), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, announced that his requests for funding that will help increase productivity at Alcoa’s Rockdale facility have been included in the House passed Fiscal Year 2007 Department of Defense Appropriations conference report. The bill includes $2.3 million to implement lightweight aluminum technology for Department of Defense ships and aircraft. Alcoa Rockdale produces the primary aluminum that could be used for these programs.

“This defense funding is great news for the Alcoa facility in Rockdale. I am pleased to have helped secure funding to advance the facility’s innovative production of lightweight aluminum that is valuable to our nation’s changing defense needs,” Congressman Carter said. “The stealth aircraft and ships that are designed with this metal will help keep our military the strongest in the world.”

$1 million of this funding will be used for advanced light weight metals technology for the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). The Rockdale facility produces primary aluminum that could be used for the LCS program. This light weight metal structure has reduced the cost and weight of structures.

The additional $1.3 million will allow for the use of this lightweight metal for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and Joint Unmanned Combat Air System platforms. This technology will address the weight and cost concerns regarding these aircraft.

The Senate is expected to take up this legislation as early as today. It will then be sent to the President for his signature.
