Carter Presents Check to Round Rock Higher Education Center

Washington, Feb 16, 2005 -

Round Rock, TX — Today U.S. Representative John R. Carter (TX-31) presented Denise M. Trauth, president of Texas State University – San Marcos, with a check for $250,000. The funding is designated for the Round Rock Higher Education Center (RRHEC) and was secured by Carter in the Fiscal Year 2005 Appropriations Omnibus bill.

Carter said, "Over the past 30 years I have seen Round Rock grow rapidly and break ground on many things. Now, I am excited to see Round Rock is breaking ground on a new education center that will provide the people of Central Texas a center for higher education."

The $250,000 is the remainder needed to fully fund the request Carter has made over the past two years. This funding will complement the $700,000 appropriated in fiscal year 2004for the RRHEC. Of that funding, Carter obtained $500,000 and U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson $200,000. The funding will continue to address the equipment and programming needs, and will also be used for additional higher education training and other instructional services.

"When we first had a vision for the Round Rock Higher Education Center several years ago, we knew it would serve a real need and we thought it stood a great chance of success," said President Trauth. "When we open the doors of that building for the first time later this year, it will be symbolic of doors of opportunity opening for so many students."

The RRHEC is operated by Texas State in partnership with Austin Community College and Temple College at Taylor. It provides higher education opportunities for students in the North Austin and Williamson County area.

"I believe increasing the presence of higher education in the community will only make Williamson County more prosperous in the future," said Carter.
