Carter Keynotes Higher Education Impact Summit in Killeen

(KILLEEN, TX) -  Central Texas has added five institutions of higher education since U.S. Representative John Carter (R-TX31) was sworn into Congress in 2003, and that has Carter praising the hard work and good planning by area educators, business, and community leaders.                          

“We have seen our congressional district grow from one college to six in less than a decade, and that would not have happened without a concerted effort at the local, state, and federal level,” said Carter.  “With Texas A&M – Central Texas, Texas State University at Round Rock, South University, Texas A&M Health and Science Center, and Texas State Technical College all now joining Temple College, we are offering a fantastic higher education opportunity for our young people, and for continuing education students of all ages, including the large number of military students in our area.”

Carter delivered the keynote address last night at the Texas Impact Higher Education Summit in Killen, hosted by Blackboard Student Services.  The executive-level summit is designed for key decision makers and planners at the university level, specifically Presidents and Provosts.  Blackboard, a leading education technology supplier, employs around 400 workers in its Killeen Blackboard Student Services call center.   The company’s learning technologies are used at more than three-quarters of all Texas higher education institutions.  

Carter says high-tech education innovations are more important than ever in today’s higher education environment.  “Colleges and universities nationwide are experiencing new pressures due to limited budgets, expanded student choice, and outside competitive pressure.  Today’s students, including many soldiers in my district, are enrolled in school while also holding a job or serving in the military, and will rely more heavily on technology to achieve retention and graduation success.”
