CARTER CONTINUES SUPPORT FOR VETERANS

Votes for Increased Benefits for Veterans; Asks VA Secretary about ID Protections for Veterans

Washington, DC, Jun 27, 2006 - Representative John Carter (TX-31) today supported House approval of a bill that will provide a projected 2.6 percent annual cost-of-living adjustment for veterans’ benefits. H.R. 4843, the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act, will benefit nearly three million service-connected veterans and survivors of service-connected veterans.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to our brave veterans who have served our nation with dedication and valor,” Congressman Carter said. “I am proud to support this bill that will ensure that our veterans are receiving adequate benefits for their service. This is the least we can do for the millions of these brave Americans.”

Congressman Carter also had the opportunity to ask VA Secretary James Nicholson about a number of issues facing veterans during today’s hearing of the Military Quality of Life Appropriations Subcommittee. Congressman Carter discussed the identity theft concerns following the recent announcement that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) lost personal data for over 26.5 million military veterans.

“In order to protect the identity of our nation’s veterans, I have co-sponsored legislation that would require the VA to implement information security enhancements. We must take precautions to ensure that the identity of our nation’s veterans is strictly guarded,” Congressman Carter said. “I have consistently supported measures to help prevent identity theft and I will continue to see that every American’s personal information remains secure.”
