CARTER CONTINUES SUPPORT FOR VETERANS

Washington, DC, May 22, 2006 - U.S. Representative John Carter (TX-31) today joined members of Congress in supporting our nation’s veterans. The House passed S. 1235, the Veterans’ Housing Opportunity and Benefits Improvement Act, which will provide enhancements to housing, health insurance, and employment benefits and services for veterans.

“Our nation’s veterans have bravely served our country; and ensuring that they receive adequate services and benefits is the least we can do to repay them for their service,” Congressman Carter said. “I have consistently worked to protect and honor our nation’s veterans. This bill takes important steps to improve housing and employment services for those who put their lives at risk to defend America’s freedom.”

Specifically, this bill includes language that authorizes a five year pilot program to provide housing assistance to disabled veterans residing temporarily in housing owned by a family member. It also reinstates the Secretary’s authority to provide adaptive housing assistance to certain members of the armed forces who would otherwise qualify but have not yet separated from service. To assist with employment, this bill requires the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Veterans’ Employment and Training to give information to employers regarding training and skills of veterans and disabled veterans, and the advantages of hiring veterans and disabled veterans. Further, it reauthorizes the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program through 2009. This bill also extends free post-separation SGLI coverage for totally disabled veterans from 1 to 2 years through September 30, 2011.

This bill will now be sent to the President’s desk to be signed into law.
